The Design of Sound Transit East Link Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (Contract E330) Presented By: Mike Wongkaew, Associate and Principal Engineer at Mott MacDonald
Mike is a licensed structural engineer in Washington and California, with more than 18 years of experience in analysis and design of tunnels and underground structures. Mike currently resides as the resident engineer for Sound Transit on the Eastlink Downtown Bellevue Tunnel. Mike hols BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Purdue University, and has various publications on the subject of seismic design of underground structures.
Sound Transit’s Eastlink Light Rail Project consists of a 14-mile light rail extension connecting downtown Seattle with the city of Bellevue and Redmond. The project will add 10 new stops and cost the region $2.8 billion. Among the most technically challenging aspects of the project is the 2,000 foot long tunnel through downtown Bellevue. The construction method chose for this tunnel is the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) also known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The tunnel alignment along 110th Ave NE will bring crews and equipment in close proximity to basements and foundations of adjacent high-rise buildings in glacially overconsolidated soil deposits.
