Topic: 2023 Kahramanmaras, Turkiye Earthquake: Geotechnical Reconnaissance and Evaluation of Seismic Building Settlements

Abstract: February 6th, 2023, the Kahramanmaras earthquake sequence induced significant damages in the southern and southeastern part of Turkiye. Reconnaissance campaigns revealed various geotechnical problems and documented the seismic performance of several geo-systems, including earthquake-triggered large-scale landslide near Turkiye – Syria border, site effects, seismic-induced liquefaction and foundation damages, and localized deformations on dams. The presentation will include brief description of the tectonic settings of Turkiye and the area of interest, detailed geotechnical observations, and seismic settlements observed at several buildings located on the reclaimed areas of the City of Iskenderun. Furthermore, comparison of the measured and estimated seismic settlements will be presented.  

Biography: Ozgun Numanoglu is a geotechnical and earthquake engineering consultant at Schnabel Engineering’s Tukwila, WA office. He utilizes numerical modeling tools to quantify the static and seismic responses of soils and soil-structure systems. Dr. Numanoglu worked as a consultant geotechnical engineer at Golder Associates Inc. He holds undergraduate degrees from the Middle East Technical University (2013) and MS and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014 and 2019, respectively.
