February Dinner Meeting 02/26/2026
Join us for the February meeting on Thursday, February 26th with Dr. Robert Kayen of UC, Berkeley. This event is co-hosted with the AEG Puget Sound Chapter.
Presenter: Prof. Robert Kayen, Ph.D., P.E., University of California, Berkeley
Title: Geology is the key: Understanding the Engineering Geology Aspects of Seismic Soil Liquefaction
Abstract: Geology and geomorphic depositional processes control the geospatial liquefaction susceptibility of soil, and when exposed to seismic loading, these deposits influence the severity of regional soil liquefaction potential in native deposits. This talk explores the Engineering Geology of the setting and processes that determine the intrinsic and state-property conditions for soil liquefaction. Examples of fluvially deposited or reworked natural Holocene and late Pleistocene deposits are presented from locales in Niigata and Fukui Cities, Japan; the Duwamish and Puyallup Rivers of Seattle and Tacoma, Washington; Denali Fault earthquake sites in Alaska; and other regions. The geospatial understanding of these geologic units is juxtaposed with more traditional stress- and energy-based geotechnical evaluations of liquefaction hazard. Geology informs us where future damage from soil liquefaction is likely to occur.
