Are you an Ideal Candidate?  The ideal candidate is a geotechnical engineering professional with diverse experience in various aspects of field investigation planning and implementation, planning laboratory testing for soil and rock, analysis, design, preparation of geotechnical memos and reports, and providing support of their design in construction related to the construction of highway facilities, roads, and bridges.  The ideal candidate will have proven experience and full professional knowledge of geotechnical engineering concepts, processes, practices. They will have practical experience in soil mechanics, foundation engineering, slope stability analysis, geotechnical laboratory testing, field exploration, and geotechnical software programs. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to lead the Geotechnical Section in delivering quality products and services on time and within budget. They are keenly interested in the success of the organization and have the skills and enthusiasm to coach, mentor, and develop each employee to his or her full potential. The ideal candidate is passionate about the Federal Lands Highway mission, and is able to clearly articulate that mission and geotechnical specifics to partners and potential customers. Experience in highway/bridge design and construction is highly desirable.

What is the difference in specialized experience between a GS-0810-11 and GS-0810-12?

GS-11:

  • Experience in various geotechnical aspects of transportation projects including the planning and implementation of subsurface field investigation programs, planning laboratory testing for soil and rock, familiarity and performance of geotechnical design analysis, and preparation of observations, methods employed, and findings in geotechnical memos and reports.
  • Experience providing recommendations with senior level oversight for structure foundations, slope stability, and retaining wall systems to include cost considerations and constructability.
  • GS Pay Schedule with Portland/Vancouver area 24.34% locality pay is $70,853 to $92,104.

GS-12:

  • Experience in all geotechnical aspects of transportation projects which include independent planning and implementation of subsurface field investigation programs, planning laboratory testing for soils and rock, performance of geotechnical design analysis, and preparation of observations, methods employed, and findings in geotechnical memos and reports.
  • Experience in independently evaluating and determining structure foundations, slope stability, and retaining walls systems to include cost considerations and constructability while providing guidance in preliminary design decisions and construction support.
  • GS Pay Schedule with Portland/Vancouver area 24.34% locality pay is $84,923 to $110,404.

  • Registered Geologist and/or Geomorphologist would be a PLUS
  • 10+ years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience with infrastructure transportation related projects, 15+ preferred
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the U.S
  • Strong all-around academic knowledge of geotechnical engineering
  • Experience with design of retaining walls, support of excavation, earth retention, slope stability, rock mechanics, soft soils, ground improvement, deep foundations, shallow foundations, dewatering…
  • Strong experience in seismic engineering is required
  • Experience working in a team setting and directing the work of others
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • The physical ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environmental conditions
  • Ability to travel to project sites
  • EPC or Design-Build experience, preferred
